Even Kulsveen, Thompson Willett’s son-in-law and the proprietor of the Willett distillery Company, is still carrying on the family tradition today by producing Kentucky rye and bourbon whiskeys. The refurbished distillery reopened in 2012, and the pot still was used for the first time. The bourbon mash bill used to make the Willett-Family Estate 6 Year Old is wheated. Before being bottled at 127.2 proof, the single barrel number 6601 was aged for six years in carefully chosen American white oak. A large, robust, complex, and delightfully sweet whiskey with flavors of vanilla, caramel, and spice is what you can anticipate.

Notes on Tasting

It’s a huge, strong bourbon with notes of leather, caramel, vanilla, and spice. Honey, vanilla, orange zest, and a hint of black tea make up the delightfully sweet taste. There are lingering notes of orange and baking spice, along with a touch of mint, in the long finish.

Concerning Willett bourbon

Craft whiskey distillation is a family tradition for the Willetts. During Reconstruction, John David Willlett started distilling at the Moore, Willett & Frenke Distillery, which is located just outside of Louisville, Kentucky. A. Lambert Willett, his 15-year-old son, started working as an apprentice for his father in 1898. Lambert eventually bought a farm outside of Bardstown, Kentucky, and in the spring of 1935 he started building the Willett Distilling Company. The family legacy endures even though Willett Distilling Company subsequently changed its name to Kentucky Bourbon Distillers. Even KBD’s owner, Kulsveen, is Willett’s son-in-law.
