Crafted from 72 carefully selected barrels of straight rye, all of which were distilled from Minnesota rye, Kentucky corn, and North Dakota malted barley, it was distilled in 2011 and bottled in 2017. The whiskey, which had strong overtones of fig, allspice, and cinnamon, was bottled at 127.2 proof after being aged for almost 6 years in #4 char American oak barrels. One of the few American distilleries that survived Prohibition is Buffalo Trace, located near Frankfort, Kentucky, which was founded in 1775. When the 18th Amendment went into force in 1920, Buffalo Trace was granted permission to bottle medical whiskey. In 1930–1933 they were allowed to make new whiskey. Because of this, George T. Stagg Distillery, as it was then known, was one of just four distilleries in Kentucky that could continue to produce whiskey after Prohibition ended. Over the course of more than 200 years, the distillery’s proprietors included Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr., who became known as the “father of the modern bourbon industry.”

The rich traditions of master distillers like E. H. Taylor Jr., Albert B. Blanton, Orville Schupp, and Elmer T. Lee are also present in the oldest distillery still in operation in the United States. Operating on the same 130 acres of land next to the Kentucky River as it has for more than 200 years, it is still family-owned today. Likewise, the distillery has been producing its famous bourbon for more than 200 years using the same method.
