Concerning Old Overholt
After relocating to West Overton, Pennsylvania, in 1800, German Mennonite farmer Henry Oberholzer continued the family’s rye whiskey distilling legacy by adding a still to the farm in 1803. In 1810, Abraham Overholt, his son, took over the distillery and made it a real business. Over the course of the century, the business expanded significantly, and by 1859, it was operating out of a brand-new distillery building that could produce 860 gallons daily. In the early 20th century, Old Overholt—the name given to the brand in 1888—became one of the biggest and most prestigious whiskeys in the nation and was a nationally recognized brand by 1900.
Family ownership of the business ended when Henry Clay Frick, Abraham’s grandson, passed away in December 1919 and bequeathed Andrew Mellon his share. Old Overholt had an authorization to sell medicinal whiskey during the Prohibition era, enabling it to sell its supply of whiskey to druggists for medical purposes. After World War II, rye whiskey producers were particularly hard affected as consumers shifted from whiskey to vodka, and Old Overholt became the sole straight rye that was supplied nationwide. The James B. Beam Distilling Company purchased Old Overholt in 1987, and it is currently owned by the Suntory family.
