Oban Distillers Edition 2021 Single Malt Scotch Whisky

100% barley that has been malted in accordance with the distillery’s precise criteria is used to make Oban Single Malt Whisky. The malted barley has a little smokey, malty flavor profile since it is partially germinated and then gently dried over a peat kiln. Following fermentation and mashing, the malted barley is twice-distilled using Oban’s lantern-shaped copper-pot stills. Because the stills are some of the smallest in Scotland, Oban can only produce 650,000 liters of whisky a year.

Oban Distillers Edition 2021 Single Malt Whisky was distilled in 2007 and matured in wood barrels for 14 years. During its beauty rest, the whisky is influenced by its surroundings and topography; the calm, temperate temperature of Oban and the warm, salty Gulf Stream are mirrored in the whisky. The whisky is finished in ex-Montilla Fino sherry casks following its original aging. This rich and powerful single malt, which is bottled at 86 proof, has a harmony of fruity, sweet, and marine flavors.

Notes on Tasting

With a hint of peat, orange zest, and brine, the scent is rich and complex. A pleasingly sweet and oaky finish with a touch of coffee rounds out the palate, which reflects the smells with fruit, grapes, saline, and malt.

Concerning Oban

John and Hugh Stevenson, who had learned the craft from their late father, obtained employment building and repairing boats at the city’s boatyard after relocating to the small port city of Oban (in northwest Scotland) with their widowed mother. The brothers quit their occupations building boats and established a brewery in the city in the 1790s. They transformed their brewery into one of Scotland’s oldest and most esteemed distilleries, Oban Distillery, in 1794.

The Stevenson family owned Oban Distillery for almost a hundred years. However, J. Walter Higgin bought the distillery in 1883 and started making improvements. To ensure that the distillery could continue to meet the unrelenting demand for its whisky, Higgin made piecemeal renovations to the structure and equipment. After Higgin’s renovation, Oban Distillery is essentially unchanged today, more than a century later.
