Oban Distillers Edition 2019 Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Barley malted in accordance with the distillery’s precise standards is used to make Oban Single Malt Whisky. The malted barley has a little smokey, malty flavor profile since it is partially germinated and then gently dried over a peat kiln. Following fermentation and mashing, the malted barley is twice-distilled using Oban’s lantern-shaped copper-pot stills. With some of Scotland’s smallest stills, Oban can only produce 650,000 gallons of whisky a year.

Oban Distillers Edition Single Malt Whisky is matured in oak barrels for 14 years after distillation. The whisky is influenced by its surroundings and geography during this period of beauty rest; the gentle, temperate climate of Oban and the warm, salty Gulf Stream are mirrored in the whisky. The whisky is double-barreled, or finished, in ex-Montilla Fino sherry casks following its first maturity. The whisky’s notes of mild, peaty smoke are complemented by the sherry casks’ addition of dried fruit aromas, especially those of cherries and strawberries.

The delicious aroma of Oban Distillers Edition Single Malt Whisky includes notes of lemon, grapes, and a trace of smoke. A lasting, smokey, and sweet aftertaste is the result of the flavor’s complex overtones of caramel, butterscotch, toffee, and tangy salt. Oban is located on the border between Scotland’s Western Highlands and Islay. The whisky has the dry, smokey character of Islay but the softer, sweeter notes of Scotland’s Highlands.

Concerning Oban

John and Hugh Stevenson, who had learned the craft from their late father, obtained employment building and repairing boats at the city’s boatyard after relocating to the small port city of Oban (in northwest Scotland) with their widowed mother. The brothers quit their occupations building boats and established a brewery in the city in the 1790s. They transformed their brewery into one of Scotland’s oldest and most esteemed distilleries, Oban Distillery, in 1794.

The Stevenson family owned Oban Distillery for almost a hundred years. However, J. Walter Higgin bought the distillery in 1883 and started making improvements. To ensure that the distillery could continue to meet the unrelenting demand for its whisky, Higgin made piecemeal renovations to the structure and equipment. After Higgin’s renovation, Oban Distillery is essentially unchanged today, more than a century later.
