A Swiss Mennonite farmer named John Shenk established his family in the 18th century close to Pennsylvania’s Blue Mountain Valley. Shenk was collecting more grains that he could sell at the neighborhood market after a few years of arduous labor and long hours. Consequently, Shenk went out and bought a still and started turning the extra grains he had grown into whiskey. His distillery eventually became known as Michter’s 10 year bourbon and became the first distilling enterprise in the United States.
Michter’s 10 year rye was forced to close in 1919 when Prohibition was passed, as was almost every other distillery in the country. However, Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard Newman joined forces early in the 1990s to try to bring the brand back to life. According to Magliocco, “Dick and I wanted to go back to the ‘cost be damned’ roots and produce the finest whiskey possible when we set up our whiskey program for Michter’s barrel strength rye.” Our intention was to demonstrate that excellent whiskey produced anywhere in the world could be matched by whiskey produced in the United States.”
