This liquid gold is plentiful in the distillery and is used for both distillation and proofing, giving their beverages an incredibly smooth texture. 56% maize, 38% green rye, and 6% malted barley make up the mash bill, which produces a rich, amber-colored dram with strong notes of butterscotch, candied orange, and apple. Rich notes of brown sugar and dry cacao dominate the palate, with a delightful aftertaste of white pepper and vanilla.

Breckenridge Distillery, located in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, produces some of the world’s top bourbons. Situated 9,600 feet above sea level, the distillery, despite its small size of 4,000 square feet, is the highest in the world. There, a mash consisting of 56% maize, 38% rye, and 6% malted barley is fermented in an open-top Scottish fermenter by Breckenridge master distiller Jordan Via. The mash is then double-distilled through a $140,000, 550-gallon Vendome copper-pot still that was originally manufactured in Kentucky.

Breckenridge is undoubtedly a well-known player in the industry with a wide variety of expressions that include chili-flavored vodkas, port-cask finished whiskeys, and award-winning bourbons. The company has also won over two dozen accolades, including two “Distillery of the Year” titles. Considering that Bryan Nolt launched Breckenridge in 2007, this is quite remarkable.

Their bourbon is aged for about three years at 120 proof in American white oak casks with a number 3 char. It is then brought to proof with pure Rocky Mountain snowmelt from the top of Mount Quandry, which has a peak elevation of 14,000 feet. The founder and CEO of Breckenridge Distillery, Bryan Nolt, states, “We have fresh snowmelt water that’s full of minerals and has its own flavor.” “The pH is perfect and the minerals add taste to our spirits just as salt adds flavor to foods,” he claims.

Bourbon is one of the quintessential American products; while it is primarily made in Kentucky, it may be manufactured anywhere in the country.
