Concerning Basil Hayden Bourbon Whiskey

Johannes Reginald Beam immigrated to the US from Germany after the American Revolutionary War and finally made Kentucky County his home. Back then, Kentucky County was governed by a military governor by the name of John J. Bowman and was still regarded as a part of Virginia. Following his relocation to Kentucky, Beam started gathering corn and initiated a family custom by turning the extra grains he gathered into whiskey. Since then, the Beam family has produced whiskey for the named company for seven generations. James Beam is the company’s namesake; he saved it during Prohibition.

Basil Hayden dark rye Whiskey, which is a part of Booker Noe’s Small Batch Bourbon Collection, is named for the Maryland Catholic Basil Hayden 10 year Sr., who in the late 1700s moved twenty-five other Catholic families to Nelson County, Kentucky (near Bardstown, home of the Jim Beam). Apart from his religious beliefs, which led him to found the first Catholic church in the present-day Commonwealth of Kentucky, Hayden was also a trailblazing distiller.

While most bourbon at the time was created from a conventional corn foundation, Hayden broke with custom in 1796 and added tiny grains to his mash because he thought the flavors of the peppery rye would give a striking contrast to the sweetness of the corn. To the dismay of the traditionalist crowd, Hayden turned out to be correct.
