The Buffalo Trace distillery crafts the wheated bourbon known as William Larue Weller bourbon. It was adored by a large number of enthusiasts, who were demanding a single-barrel bottling of the bourbon. Each barrel, which is bottled at 97 proof, is different, but they all have the distinctive Weller profile—soft and energetic with flavors of cherry and spice.

On the nose, there are notes of cherry, orange zest, mint, and vanilla. The palate finishes long with cherry, cinnamon, coffee, and a hint of peppery spice. Sweet notes include caramel, dark fruit, baking spice, and cocoa. weller bourbon lineup

William Larue Weller, who served in the Louisville Brigade during the Mexican-American War, went back to his hometown Kentucky. His grandfather, Daniel Weller, bought a distillery in Nelson County in 1800. His family had contributed to the settlement of Kentucky in the late 1700s. After the war, W. L. Weller returned to Kentucky and started working at his grandfather’s distillery, where he was employed by the family firm. With a great sense of business and a sharp taste, Weller created the first-ever bourbon in 1849 using wheat as the secondary grain rather than rye. While rye is used as a supplementary grain in some bourbons, the flavor profile of wheated bourbons (such Pappy Van Winkle and Larceny Bourbon, which finally mimicked W. L. Weller’s mashbill) is softer and more delicate. Antebellum America loved Weller’s bourbon so much that he was eventually forced to affix a green fingerprint as a certificate of authenticity to his invoices and barrels. weller wl

Bourbon is one of the quintessential American products; while it is primarily made in Kentucky, it may be manufactured anywhere in the country.
