Concerning Sagamore Spirit

Rye was used as a cover crop by farmers in Maryland as early as the nineteenth century. In addition to producing excellent whiskey, its fibrous and robust character preserved soil health and prevented erosion. Additionally, it turned out that making rye whiskey was more profitable than selling the grain raw. Rye whiskey became the unofficial spirit of Maryland once the grains were distilled following the spring harvest.
