Tasting Notes
aroma of cocoa, with notes of vanilla and caramel, as well as toasted rye and wood spices. Sweeter flavors of vanilla, orange zest, and raisins counterbalance the palate’s dominant aromas of rich, deep chocolate, cloves, and spices. With hints of cocoa beans, baking spices, and allspice, the finish is lengthy and exquisite.
Concerning Rittenhouse Straight Rye Whisky
The British Royal Navy blocked American ports during the American Revolutionary War, preventing the colonists who later became revolutionaries from bringing essential supplies into the country. American distilleries that had been turning imported molasses from the Caribbean islands into rum started turning rye grains into rum as a result of the blockade.
The Monongahela Rye, a highly aromatic rye whisky named after the Monongahela River, which was located next to several distilleries, was produced by about 5,000 log stillhouses in Pennsylvania’s Fayette, Allegheny, Westmoreland, and Washington counties by the end of the war. Many of these distillers relocated south into Kentucky and Tennessee after the Whiskey Rebellion, a bloodless conflict sparked by an excise levy placed on distilled alcohol.
