Remus Repeal Reserve Bourbon Gift Box
Known as the “King of the Bootleggers,” George Remus was a well-known bootlegger who used the Volstead Act’s flaws to brew bourbon during the Prohibition era. He was born in Germany in 1878 and moved to Chicago in the 1880s with his family. He began working in his uncle’s pharmacy as a teenager and eventually rose to the position of owner. The drugstore would become the cornerstone of his business, and it was there that he gained skills that would prove important throughout Prohibition.
He changed occupations, entering the legal field and eventually working as a trial defense lawyer, where he acquired even more valuable abilities. He would defend numerous bootleggers when Prohibition was coming to an end, noting the wealth they were able to accumulate. He managed to get around the Volstead Act once it was passed, which gave his fledgling bootlegging business a constant supply of spirits. As the empire grew, Remus eventually employed 3,000 people, including politicians, and had a brief life of luxury that is said to have served as the inspiration for The Great Gatsby.
