This produces a crisp, highly fruity spirit with a hint of mineral spice. The Distillers Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky, a second maturation batch that was completed in Montilla Fino sherry casks, was released in 2022. This 43% ABV Scotch has mellow butterscotch, toffee, and caramel tastes. It also has a very fruity and slightly salty character, which is typical of Oban Whisky but with additional notes of the beautiful Scottish shore and the sea.

Notes on Tasting

A lovely richness of crushed grapes, orange zest, salt, and smoke can be found in the nose. There are notes of butterscotch, toffee, and caramel along with flavors of waves of salinity, gentle malts, and delicate fruits. Sea salt, smokey undertones, and sweetened Jamaican coffee hints round out the sip.

Concerning Oban

John and Hugh Stevenson, who had learned the craft from their late father, obtained employment building and repairing boats at the city’s boatyard after relocating to the small port city of Oban (in northwest Scotland) with their widowed mother. The brothers quit their occupations building boats and established a brewery in the city in the 1790s. They transformed their brewery into one of Scotland’s oldest and most esteemed distilleries, Oban Distillery, in 1794.

The Stevenson family owned Oban Distillery for almost a hundred years. However, J. Walter Higgin bought the distillery in 1883 and started making improvements. To ensure that the distillery could continue to meet the unrelenting demand for its whisky, Higgin made piecemeal renovations to the structure and equipment. After Higgin’s renovation, Oban Distillery is essentially unchanged today, more than a century later.
