Abram S. Bowman bought the Sunset Hills Estate in northern Virginia, which is located under the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, after Prohibition was repealed in 1933. After starting to farm the estate with his sons, Bowman was able to produce more maize, wheat, and rye in a short period of time than he could sell at the market. Bowman consequently constructed a distillery at Sunset Hills and started turning the extra grains he had collected into bourbon.
bowman brothers small batch bourbon honors the Bowman family’s heritage. A specific strain of yeast is used to ferment a mash of corn, rye, and malted barley, which is then used to make bourbon. The mash is then distilled three times using a special copper still. After being distilled, the bourbon is matured for a minimum of seven years in American white oak casks with a #3 char (a #3 char means the inside of the cask has burned for 35 seconds).
The aroma of freshly baked cookies, vanilla custard, toasted nuts, and caramelized apples permeates the clear amber color of Bowman Brothers Bourbon. Gingerbread, chocolate, toffee, and coconut cream are among the first scents to emerge, while a hint of spice from the dried fruits rounds out the bouquet. The bourbon received 92 points from the Beverage Testing Institute in addition to winning the Gold Medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2011 and 2013.
